The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a grant of £491,500 to a new project – HERITAGE INSPIRED: South Yorkshire’s Faith Tourism Initiative. This project has grown from experience of the hugely successful Rotherham Churches Tourism Initiative. It will work with heritage faith buildings across Doncaster, Barnsley and Sheffield until 2011.
South Yorkshire has a high number of historic and architecturally rich faith buildings along with many others with significant cultural and social heritage. HERITAGE INSPIRED will develop their heritage, education and tourism potential. HERITAGE INSPIRED will work with 100 partner sites, from all faiths. The project increases the access to and awareness of fine heritage faith sites. It organises a programme of events, open days, guided walks and exhibitions – all free of charge. It also produces interpretative materials such as leaflets, guidebooks, visitor trails, newsletters and a comprehensive website will be produced - again, all free of charge. HERITAGE INSPIRED offers trainig workshops to all volunteers. They include 'Creating the Perfect Welcome', 'Interpreting Your Site' and 'First Aid First Response'. These workshops are also available across the Uk for a small charge. Local people and communities are the mainstay of this project and they are encouraged to take an active role in every stage of events and interpretative materials. The grant is wonderful news for South Yorkshire, faith buildings are the country’s most visited historical sites and by the end of the project our county as a whole will have the best resourced sites in the UK. Fiona Spiers, Heritage Lottery Fund Manager for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: "Places of worship of all kinds matter profoundly to individuals and to communities - not only for their religious significance but also as places of beauty and the markers of key moments in personal or national history. HLF is determined to do what it can to help look after them and to give people the opportunity to enjoy them - this project does just that.” Sarah Arthur, Project Manager for the initiative said “South Yorkshire has many fascinating ‘hidden gems’, rich in history. We are looking forward to working with these sites and to five years of success!” If you would like to find out more about this project, or become involved either as a partner site or volunteer please contact HERITAGE INSPIRED on 0845 6529634 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
